101 Miles Done, 1099 to Go!

March 7, 2011 by Clive Leave a Comment

Cycling Challenge Update

The last few weeks have been pretty horrible weather round here but I have managed to ride my mountain bike on a few occasions and cover a few miles for my Cycle Challenge 2011. Perhaps not as much as I’d like but the overall total is now 101 miles. That’s just 1099 miles to go then!

As expected, the very fact that I have a challenge like this has meant that I have been able to motivate myself to cycle about once a week. That’s not a huge amount but I wouldn’t have cycled half as much without the target. The only unexpected consequence so far has been that one of my cycling buddies spotted me on one such trip and I’ve now been (jokingly) ‘accused’ of ‘sneaky practice’. Several emails were sent round on a Monday morning! It’s all good fun though.

So far, I’ve just been doing rides that take about an hour (in my case, that’s 10 -15 miles) which maintains a basic level of fitness for the year ahead. However, I’ve deliberately chosen routes that contain hills that I normally struggle with at this time of year. It’s working because nothing has been too difficult.

At this stage, with an even spread throughout the year, I should have covered about 200 miles by now so, on that basis, I’m 100 miles behind schedule. However, I know that I will do a lot more in the summer – so I’m not worried at the moment. I need to start doing a few longer distances over the month ahead though.

Right then, next 100 miles coming up!
