My cycling year in review

December 27, 2014 by Clive Leave a Comment

Champagne to celebrate the 100 mile cycle ride in September

This time of year is good for looking forward and back so here’s my cycling year in review.

I’ve had a good cycling year although I’ve not covered as many miles as I expected. This was partly because I became a bit fed up with “chasing the miles” and also because I’ve been running more in recent months.

My cycling plans for 2014 included a 1300 mile target but I’ve “only” ridden 1050 miles. Oh well. The target has been great in previous years because it really motivated me to get out on my bike. This year, I was on target until the last three months but after a 100 mile cycle ride in September I felt like a break from it. Or, at least, a break from riding to achieve distances. I think I needed more “fun rides”.

It’s worthwhile having something to aim for and I will set myself another mileage target in January. I suspect it will be something like 1000 miles though. Enough to get me cycling more but not something that I feel is a “chore”.

Aside from the mileage target “failure”, my cycling year has been very enjoyable. I’ve been on some great cycling trips including a weekend cycling the Ridgeway Trail, another trip to Dark Star Brewery, a day out in Kent, and the 100 miler Surrey and Sussex ride. Living in Sussex, cycling always reminds me of the fantastic countryside near here. It’s still remarkably easy to get away from it all!

In September, I was able to see the Tour of Britain cycle through Horsham and whilst this might not have been quite as exciting as the Tour de France stages in the UK, there was a fantastic atmosphere in the town centre as the riders came through. More events like this please!

One final point. Thinking back a few years, I didn’t have a cycling blog/website like this and it was easy to forget about the year and the cycling I’d done. So, I’m really pleased that I started this site and have continued with it.

Overall, my cycling year has been a good one and I’m looking forward to more cycling in 2015!
